PECTUS EXCAVATUM SURGERY HAS HEALTH BENEFITS, EXPERT SAYS
Chest wall surgery, once dismissed as primarily cosmetic, has serious health and psychological benefits for children and adolescents who need to be active and, of course, desperately want to look normal like their peers.
BOWEL MANAGEMENT PROGRAM: CUSTOM MADE FOR THE TOUGHEST CASES
A program designed by pediatric colorectal surgeons uses enemas and a fairly simple, stepwise approach to help the toughest cases of fecal incontinence and constipation get under control, giving them a new lease on life.
EOS: BETTER X-RAYS FOR CHILDREN
The EOS imaging machine at Shriners Hospitals for Children – Northern California uses 70%-80% less X-rays than a conventional machine, which adds up to more safety for children and adolescents who need lots of imaging.

Myrtle Walks the Green - Lucky dog walks again thanks to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California
As a puppy, Myrtle did not fully stand on her hind legs. English bulldogs like Myrtle are prone to spina bifida. Now, at one year old, Myrtle stands and walks, thanks to an investigational treatment with stem cells. Myrtle is one of 10 English bulldog pups to have had a spina bifida resection procedure where the repair was seeded with mesenchymal stem cells at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, thanks to a research program at the Institute for Pediatric Regenerative Medicine and the Northern California Shriners Hospital. The positive results seen in the dogs helped lead to the approval of a human trial of stem cells in six, fetal, spina bifida surgeries. Best part, maybe? Myrtle now has a family and lives with a Chihuahua in a nice cozy home in Sacramento.
